Take a Camera

November 5, 2025

To stay relatively consistent with my blog posts, I need to take a camera whenever heading out and about — so with that in mind, I did just that for this evening wander.

I opted to carry the Fuji GFX100s paired with the GF20–35mm F4 R WR.

I’m often in Kirribilli for work, and often treat myself to six calamari rings for dinner. I could have twelve but that would be greedy and not so great for the love handles!

This particular afternoon, I had a few architectural shots to finish nearby, so I took the opportunity. Over the years, I’ve been threatening to take my wife along for my calamari dinner ritual, as I genuinely believe it’s the best calamari I’ve ever had. We ordered twelve this time (naturally), plus a few extra tasty items, and as usual, it didn’t disappoint — nor did the harbour views. Kirribilli Seafoods — sensational as always.

We then wandered — a short loop past Luna Park, through the railway viaducts to Lavender Bay Parklands, and back to Kirribilli for a well-deserved Gelatissimo. Any excuse!

Because I carry a camera — or three — almost every day for work, I often leave them behind on these smaller explorations. Usually, it’s just the iPhone; I can’t be bothered deciding what to bring or what to leave behind.

Before this shift in mindset, I’d pack everything: a full backpack, three cameras, multiple lenses, a tripod… you name it. I was convinced that having every possible angle covered would guarantee the perfect image.

No prizes for guessing how that went — most of the time, the cameras stayed in the bag unless everything was perfect. And let’s be honest — perfect is a very rare thing.

So, I’m changing that mindset. I’m learning to stop worrying about perfect light or feeling like I need a stack of great shots. Instead, I’m just taking a few photos of whatever catches my eye. Whether the end result is one photo, none, or twenty-one, it doesn’t matter. It’s simply about capturing what grabs my attention — using whatever gear I happen to have with me.

To be clear, I’ll still use my phone — I do love the Hipstamatic app — and there will be times when I haul around a heavy backpack, tripod and chase the perfect light. But more often than not, I’m keeping things simple for these little outings and just taking a camera.

Anyway, enough words from me — I hope you enjoy the few pics I captured from this evening wander. I’d really love to hear from you — drop a comment below or ask a question. Who knows, I might even have an answer for you!

WHY? WHY? WHY?

BRANCHING OUT - TIME TO GROW

Second blog post in, and already questioning this particular life choice…

Ever have one of those moments where you stop and ask yourself why you’ve started something new — especially something that doesn’t come naturally? That’s me right now, sitting here trying to write a blog. I’ve spent years behind a camera and primarily using a keyboard for editing - not writing. Writing is definitely outside my comfort zone. I keep asking myself, why? why? why? It feels like torture sometimes. It hurts my brain and I know when time poor these posts may be few and far between. But here I am — giving it a crack, trying to grow.

So why am I doing this?

  1. To learn. I’ve never blogged before, and I don’t see myself as a writer — but that’s exactly why I should try.

  2. To further connect with photography. It seems I only pick up my camera for work - this needs to change — to enjoy why I do what I do, and maybe inspire myself (and others) along the way.

  3. To keep it simple. My goal is to head out with just one camera and one lens. (That won’t always be the case, but it’s a good start!)

  4. To explore creatively. I want to focus on subjects and compositions that suit whatever camera/lens combo I’m carrying. Force myself to view subjects differently

  5. To share beyond social media. This different space to post my captures

  6. To be transparent. I want to promote my work, grow my business, and sell more images — and I’m not shy about saying that.

Each blog post will be a mix of words and photos — sometimes one, sometimes a few. My words might be short, but I hope they offer a bit of inspiration, a small lesson, or just a moment of connection for anyone who finds their way here.

So that’s my why…

It’s not about being perfect at writing — it’s about creating, learning and sharing. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for taking the time. I hope these posts grow into something worthwhile — for me, and maybe for you too.

Chasing Colour in Canberra

Chasing Colour in Canberra: Is This a Photographer’s Dream?

As a family — and through a few work trips — we’ve made plenty of visits to Canberra. In fact, Canberra holds many family memories: riding around the lake, exploring galleries, grabbing great burgers at @brodburger, my favourite beer from @crankshaft, sensational wines from @clonakilla and @edenroad — just a couple of my favs — and trying not to kill myself on @Mount Stromlo! But somehow, I’d never done Floriade.

So when I was invited to capture some images, I jumped at the chance — and my goodness, it did not disappoint!

Simply stunning. The colour is mesmerizing, which is a good thing because it helps distract from the hordes of people cramming into the place. Floriade itself was hectic! I’ve never seen Canberra so busy.

We also visited Tulip Top Gardens, a surprisingly peaceful experience. We arrived early and enjoyed a quiet wander with only a handful of others around. It didn’t take long to fill up — people setting up for picnics, slow-wandering oldies admiring every petal, and kids running and playing. Yet somehow, it still felt tranquil.

A couple of tips from me…

🌷 Do Floriade first (Commonwealth Park, Canberra). Go early, then get out and explore the rest of Canberra — walk the lake, visit galleries — there’s so much to see and do.
🌷 Visit Tulip Top Gardens early too. Be there at opening time and you might have it all to yourself. The gardens aren’t huge, so you can wander slowly and take it all in, or linger all day if you like.
📸 For fellow photographers: backlight and cloud are your friends. Don’t get me wrong — in full sun the gardens are spectacular, bursting with colour. But I find the tones and details really come alive when shaded or softly lit. Honestly,  I’d love to go back on a foggy, drizzly day — it would be very cool (literally!).

I don’t need many excuses to escape the big smoke — anywhere is awesome — but spring in Canberra’s Floriade and Tulip Top Gardens will not disappoint. I’ll definitely be back to explore more spring gardens.

Is this trip a photographer’s dream? In my opinion, absolutely yes — but if you’re not a fan of colour and crowds, it might be a definite no for you!
